WHAT ARE GLP-1 AGONISTS?

GLP-1 agonists (like Wegovy/semaglutide and Zepbound/tirzepatide) are both prescription injectable medications FDA-approved for weight loss in adults and children over the age of twelve. These medications are both glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. GLP-1 agonists work by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 that targets areas of our brain that regulate appetite. The body normally releases this hormone when it senses food in the small intestine. The hormone regulates blood sugar and slows down the speed that food leaves your gastrointestinal tract. These things work together to increase the feeling of fullness, which decreases food cravings and causes you to eat less. By consuming less calories, you will lose weight. These medications also help to maintain weight loss.

AM I A CANDIATE FOR THE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM?

Most adults who are overweight or obese are candidates for our Weight Loss Program. Candidates must have a BMI of 25.5 or higher and be willing to make lifestyle changes including eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and participating in regular exercise. Contraindications to treatment include:

• Personal or family history of thyroid cancers, MEN1 or MEN2 Syndrome (genetic disorder predisposing to endocrine cancers).
• History of pancreatic or liver disorders – Such as cancer, pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency, hepatitis, elevated liver or pancreatic enzymes, cirrhosis, NASH (non-alcoholic steatosis), or liver failure
• Gallbladder disease/gallstones
• Stomach or intestine problems
• Kidney disease
• Eye disease (such as blurred vision or diabetic retinopathy)
• An unusual or allergic reaction to GLP-1 agonists, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• History of depression, suicide attempt, thoughts of suicide, or mental health illness
• Daily alcohol use
• You are taking medications that lower your blood sugar (i.e., diabetes medications)
• You are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breast-feeding

HOW IS IT USED?

GLP-1 agonists are self-injected into the skin once a week. The medication is continued until you are at your healthy goal weight. It is a prescription medication provided by one of our APPs who regularly monitors your progress and any potential side effects. He or she will review your history and teach you how to administer the injection.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

You will have a consultation and then monthly appointments with one of our APPs. There is a fee for every appointment and then the cost of the medication which we obtain directly from the manufacturer and can vary $349 to $499 per month depending on the dose and medication. We also provide the option to purchase injection supplies from our office if needed.  Prices are subject to change.

SHOULD I DIET AND EXERCISE AND DIET WHILE IN THE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM?

Yes! This medication is effective when combined with diet and exercise. It does not work well if previous eating habits and exercise regimens that led to weight gain are maintained. Our provider will go over these important lifestyle changes with you during your consultation. Building healthy habits is essential for long term success and weight loss maintenance.

RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH TIRZEPATIDE AND SEMAGLUTIDE

All medications have potential side effects and risks. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. Anyone who has ever had an allergic reaction to GLP-1 agonists should not take this drug. Your provider will review other potential side effects at your consultation.
